The Boeing Company – Boeing C-17 Stringers in Straps Team

Type of Team: Lean
The goals of the Stringers in Straps team was to eliminate the number of crane moves, reduce the set-up time required for stringer loading process, and reduce or eliminate ergonomic and safety risks inherent in the process. The team used brainstorming, fishbone, and SWOT analysis to help with reducing cycle time. This improvement would ultimately help the team reduce the repetitive motion required to perform the process, target the ergonomic goals, and reduce the number of crane moves. The project also aligned and met the organization’s goals of safety, quality, and cost. Safety was met by eliminating 48 crane moves; quality wast met by eliminating the potential for part damage by eliminating the individual wrapping of parts; and cost was met by eliminating 16 days of non-value-added activitiy from the production process.
