CSX’s corporate vision is “to be the safest, most progressive North American railroad, relentless in the pursuit of customer and employee excellence.” The project to implement a company-wide system to track deficiencies across its entire 21,000 mile network, within a 75-day implementation schedule, promotes the vision. The tools selected, such as process mapping, FMEA, and Murphy’s analysis allowed the team to select the best alternative and mistake-proof the solution prior to implementation. The team used the Design for Six Sigma method, following the DMADV discipline to create a technology system that interfaces with the Federal Railroad Administration. This system sets the standard for the rail industry. Benefits achieved include improving remediation of deficiencies within the time specification from 78 percent to 99 percent; standardized remediation procedures; and further improvements in the company’s safety record.

Local Train Management Tool Team
Presentation: Tuesday, May 25, 4:15 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Room: 265
Type of Team: Six Sigma Improvement
The project followed established CSX methodology of Six Sigma and the DMADV discipline to develop a new tool to manage local trains. The tool leveraged GPS technology and the CSX accountability model while consolidating relevant data into a single reporting system to provide managers for the first time with daily customer service and train and crew performance activities. This project has assisted CSX in reducing local crew overtime by $10.6 million USD year over year 2008 to 2009. The tool has also been instrumental in allowing improvement in the Industrial Switching Excellence measure. The ISE is the company’s prime customer service measure.
