The TR-TE team from Littelfuse Philippines made step-function reductions in fuse soldering defect from 24,500 ppm to 12,300 ppm, achieving the 50-percent defect reduction target at the time the project was closed in September 2009. Using LF6, the Littelfuse 6-Step Process, some tools were used to make the analysis and improvements possible, namely voice of the customer, critical-to-quality characteristics, attribute agreement analysis, process capability analysis, fishbone diagram, hypothesis test, design of experiments, and statistical process control. The team has never stopped improving, further bringing down the defect level to 1,697 ppm as of December 2009. This has greatly contributed to achieving the scrap reduction target of the company, generated significant material cost savings, woven the group to a more tightly-knit team and, most important, won back customer confidence.
