Type of Team: Six Sigma
The Urology Group, the largest urological group medical practice in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana, undertook the implementation of a Six Sigma program to improve financial performance. The strategy was to train two senior executives and two managers in Six Sigma and then to implement the practices on some very targeted improvement opportunities. The entire management team supports the Six Sigma methodology. Significant financial results were achieved. The team’s objective was to reduce the number of days in accounts receivable as well as lead the organization to be more adaptable to changes in the medical economic environment. The team followed the DMAIC method using flowcharting, cause and effect diagrams and matrices, time studies, SIPOC, as well as statistical analysis. The results included improvement of the organization’s ability to be adaptable to changes in the medical economic environment. The project achieved $750,000 in savings, mainly through standardization, as well as improvement from 90 days to 20 days in accounts receivable.
